Quarteira
Quarteira
Where is it ? Located beside Vilamoura, 25 Kilometres from Faro airport. Approximately twenty minutes journey by car.
How Big is it ? Quarteira actually has city status and is home to about 2o,ooo permanent residents. It is also a home for seasonal workers who service nearby fancier resorts such as Vilamoura.
Who goes there ? Quarteira has a superb beach and seafront cafes and bars but is not the most beautiful area for tourists in the Algarve. Historically the town has been popular with Portuguese natives who own property in the area.
What about food and accommodation ? There are budget apartment complexes along the seafront and there is also a large campsite just outside the town. There is the usual selection of seafood cafes along the beach but some of the most authentic seafood restaurants in the Algarve can be found near the fish market.
Quarteira is a medium-sized working town next to the more glamorous Vilamoura. What it lacks in glamour it makes up for in excellent Seafood restaurants and a superb blue flag beach that is always under crowded even in high season. If staying in nearby Vilamoura you should do your shopping in Quarteira as prices are for real Portuguese people, not up market holiday makers. Every Wednesday it hosts an excellent market which draws visitors from all along the Algarve. The gypsy market got a bad press until recently but since it relocated to a purpose spot near the fonte santa it is back to being busy and full of bargains.
Quarteira tends to be quiet in the off-season, and although it is worth a visit it feels considerably more industrial than Vilamoura its nearest neighbour.
