Fuzeta
Where is it ? Fuzeta(Fuseta) is about twenty kilometres east of Faro Airport. About 25 minutes by car on a straight road along the N125.
How big is it ? Fuzeta is a fishing village and has a small poulation, however it has a fine sandy river beach which can get crowded during the summer period.
Who goes there ? Mostly sunseekers during the summer who want to laze on the fantastic beach and on the Praia de Fuxeta across the lagoon on the Ilha Da Armona.
What about Food and Accommodation ? Despite tourist developments in the last decade the town is still a small palm tree lined beauty spot and restaurants and hotels are limited. There are some cafes around the towns central square or Largo. and some shopping can be found in the towns main street Rua da Liberdade.
Fuzeta is a small town that is usually very laid back although it can have lively days during the summer . Near the lagoon “Ria Formosa”, which is the nature reserve of the Algarve. In former times Fuzeta was an old fishing village. You can walk from the old town to a small, gentle, sandy beach, which is especially suitable and safe for small children. During the summer season ferry boats take you to the island “Ilha de Armona”. Fuzeta has a lovely promenade, and a few simple restaurants and cafés, a market hall with fresh fish, vegetables and fruit, some mini-markets and a selection of other shops. If you want to limit your stay to Fuzeta town, you do not need a rented car; even a train station is only a few steps from the old part of the town which takes you to Faro, the Capital of the Algarve or Vila Real de Santo António, near the Spanish border. Near the habour there is regular flea market and in the summer live bands are playing occasionally. Fuzeta is a famous place for twitchers to gather for bird watching by the Rio Formosa.
The fishing town of Fuzeta is one of the Algarve’s least “discovered” resorts, probably because of its shortage of accommodation. It is not the region’s most beautiful town, but it does retain some character as a working fishing port. Indeed its daily routine revolves around the fishermen, whose colourful boats line up alongside the river in town, though in summer Fuzeta also attracts a lively community of backpackers.
Many people splash about in the calm waters of the river, where there’s a fine stretch of white sand. There sre regular ferries (April– Oct roughly every 15min, 9am–7pm; Nov– March 4 daily; €1.50 return) from the fishing quay at the back of the campsite across the lagoon to Praia da Fuzeta on the eastern end of the Ilha da Armona.
